CDL General Knowledge Practice Test
Updated October 27, 2026
Every CDL applicant takes the General Knowledge test. It usually has 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass, so at least 40 right. It covers the whole first part of the CDL manual: inspections, basic control, shifting, seeing, communicating, speed and space management, hazards, emergencies and cargo. Try the free questions below.
These answers follow the model CDL manual most states use. Check your state’s manual for any differences.

-
You're driving a 40-foot vehicle at 35 mph. According to the CDL manual, how many seconds of following distance should you keep at a minimum?Answer: BKeep at least 1 second for every 10 feet of vehicle length at speeds below 40 mph. A 40-foot vehicle needs 4 seconds. Above 40 mph, add 1 more second.
-
You're stopped on the shoulder of a two-lane road. Where should you place your three reflective warning triangles?Answer: BOn a two-lane road or an undivided highway, place one triangle about 10 feet behind the vehicle, one about 100 feet behind and one about 100 feet ahead, so traffic from both directions is warned.
-
What is the minimum tread depth for tires on the front (steering) axle?Answer: BFront (steering) axle tires need at least 4/32 inch of tread in every major groove. Other tires need at least 2/32 inch.
-
Your vehicle starts to skid because the drive wheels lost traction on a slippery road. What should you do first?Answer: CTo correct a drive-wheel skid, take your foot off the brake or accelerator so the wheels can roll and regain traction, and steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go. Be ready to countersteer as the vehicle straightens.
-
When is hydroplaning most likely?Answer: DHydroplaning happens when tires ride on a layer of water instead of the road. It's more likely at higher speeds, in standing water and with low tire pressure or worn tread. If it happens, release the accelerator and push in the clutch; don't brake.
-
How should you check that your cargo is secure on a trip?Answer: AInspect cargo and its securement before the trip, within the first 50 miles, and then every 150 miles or every 3 hours (whichever comes first), and after every break.
-
Why is it dangerous to drive with a hot engine and then remove the radiator cap right away?Answer: BThe cooling system is under pressure when hot. Removing the cap can make scalding coolant spray out. Let the engine cool, and if you must check it, use the vehicle's safe procedure.
-
How far ahead does the CDL manual say most good drivers look?Answer: CThe model CDL manual says good drivers look 12 to 15 seconds ahead, which is about a quarter mile at highway speed.
-
Total stopping distance is made up of:Answer: BTotal stopping distance = perception distance + reaction distance + braking distance. (With air brakes, brake lag distance is added too.)
-
Under federal rules, what blood alcohol concentration is the limit for a driver operating a commercial motor vehicle?Answer: BFor commercial motor vehicle drivers, a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04% or more counts as driving under the influence under federal rules, half the usual 0.08% limit for other drivers.
-
When driving at night, when should you switch to low beams?Answer: CDim your high beams within about 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and when following another vehicle within about 500 feet, so you don't blind other drivers.
-
You're going down a long, steep downgrade. When should you shift to a lower gear?Answer: DSelect the right lower gear before starting down. Shifting down partway can be hard, and the engine's braking effect is needed from the start.
-
Using the snub braking method on a downgrade, when do you release the brakes?Answer: AApply the brakes firmly enough for a definite slowdown, and release them when you're about 5 mph below your safe speed. When speed rises back to the safe speed, repeat.
-
How many tiedowns does cargo need, at a minimum, under the model CDL manual?Answer: BThe manual calls for at least one tiedown for each 10 feet of cargo, and at least two tiedowns for any cargo, however short.
-
What type of fire is a B:C extinguisher designed for?Answer: CA B:C extinguisher is rated for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (electrical) fires, which are common in vehicle fires.
-
When backing a large vehicle, which way should you back when possible?Answer: DBack toward the driver's side when you can, because you can see better by looking out the side window. Use a helper when possible.
Tips
Many General Knowledge questions have one obviously unsafe answer and two that sound reasonable. Pick the one that gives you the most space and time, such as slowing down, increasing following distance or stopping safely, rather than the one that saves time.
