CDL School Bus Practice Test
Updated October 27, 2026
To drive a school bus you need the S endorsement, which requires a knowledge test and a skills test, and usually the passenger endorsement too. Most school bus questions are about keeping children safe around the bus. Try the free questions below.
These answers follow the model CDL manual most states use. Your state and school district add their own rules, so check your state’s manual.
Key points
- Danger zones: the area around the bus where children are at most risk of being hit, extending as far as 30 feet from the front bumper, with the first 10 feet the most dangerous, and also to the sides and rear.
- Mirrors: outside flat mirrors (sides and rear), outside convex mirrors (wider view), crossover mirrors (the front of the bus) and the inside mirror (passengers).
- Loading and unloading is where most child deaths happen. Count students, use the mirrors, and make sure everyone is clear before moving.
- Railroad crossings: stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail.
- Evacuation: know when and how to evacuate, and plan for students who need help.
